A poem I wrote last summer.

Just 13 votes.

Maybe it’s time we took a back seat
And stopped being the world’s policeman.
Maybe it’s time we gave up the ghost
And left the world stage.
Let the US and French go it alone
There’s a first time for everything…
Just 13 votes, that’s all it took
And plenty of time.

Voting takes place in the House of Commons during the Second Reading of the Higher Education Bill which introduces controversial university tuition fees.  Prime Minister Tony Blair turned the tide in his battle over tuition fees by winning over the leading Labour rebel.  Former chief whip Nick Brown's dramatic eleventh-hour switch convinced others to back the Prime Minister
